It´s this time of the year again… December has started without us really realizing it. And with it also Christmas time. The supermarkets have been offering Christmas cookies already for weeks now. Even here on the island the shops welcome you with an overload of Christmas products.
Decoration in the streets and lights in the evening provide also in warmer temperatures a little Christmas feeling, even if it is probably not as pre Christmassy as in Germany and northern Europe. What’s missing here a bit is Christmas markets and mulled wine, although I could not have one this year anyway. But I’ve already made some delicious Christmas cookies to get into the vibe, plus the lights and decoration that we have here make me happy.
On the other hand, I am somehow also glad that I don’t have the chance to get sucked into the Christmas craziness in Germany. You will hear Christmas songs wherever you go for weeks, which is probably supposed to raise the mood and favor buying behavior. What we can/ should and have to buy according to adverts is really impressive. In any case, it has to be big and mostly expensive gifts … Really?
What is Christmas about actually?
For us, December has always been a month, which we spend together with the whole family, thanks to birthdays and of course the Christmas holidays. These are all beautiful memories and give the Christmas season a certain magic. Time with family and beloved ones is worth more than any material gift. Especially if you live far away from home and hours together are no longer self-evident. Time for and with each other is the best gift!
And if you still like to give something material…. support the local shops and markets, handmade products are wonderful. Here in Lajares, for example, every Saturday there is the craft market, where you will surely find something for each of your loved ones.
Lesano wishes everyone a Merry Christmas and happy holidays! We spend it on the island of Fuerteventura this year and wait until our special Christmas present is born 🙂
All the best from Fuerteventura,
Kathrin
